Angel Cabrera from Argentina, got the second Africa Open tournament off to a fine start by setting a new course record 10 under par, 62. The previous record was held by Englishman, Malcolm McKenzie at the 2001 SA Open.
Cabrera, who started on the 9th in near perfect conditions, was 11 under after 14 holes and there was talk of a possible new world record. The lowest score in tour history is a 59 set by five players: David Duval, Chip Beck, Al Geiberger on the PGA Tour; and Doug Dunakey and Notah Begay on the Nike Tour.
Cabrera birdied 9, 12, 13, 16, 17, 18, 2, 3 and 4 and eagled the 15th. The only blemish on his card was a 5 on the fifth hole.
Retief Goosen and Darren Clarke also had good rounds posting scores of 66 and 67 respectively. Canadian, Graham de Laet, was hot on Cabrera’s heels carding a 9 under par 63. Darren Fichardt and Charl Schwartzel finished the day three off the pace.
In a very rare feat, Michael du Toit (South Africa) and Madigascan, Johary Raveloarison both holed out in one on the Par 3 second hole. |
