Angela Trollip - Club Champion 2011
Our club championship was held this year on Tuesday 3rd May and Sunday 8th May. However due to Sunday being rained out, the 2nd round was only held on Tuesday with the matchplay on Thursday. Not the ideal situation!
The field was not as big as last year due to the fact that the 2nd round fell on Sunday 8th which was Mothers’ Day and a lot of our members felt their family commitments came first. We will try to make sure this does not happen next year. Nevertheless, what we lacked in quantity we made up for in quality! We even had a hole in one, Issy Cocks on the 17th, and I was a witness!
Russell Kruger from Mugg and Bean and Jemina’s Guest House kindly sponsored our prizes again this year. Thank you Russell.

Johan du Plessis - Club Champion 2011
This year we had 86 members take part in Club Champs. They were once again broken up into A, B and C Divisions. The Stroke Play was played over the weekend of the 14th and 15th 0f May. The weather was near perfect for golf and this was not truly reflected in the scoring. All three divisions were, however, keenly contested.
The Divisional results were as follows:
A-Division
Stroke Play
Daniel Gouws had a two shot victory with a score of 147 ( 72;75 ) over Mark Miles 149 ( 77;72 ). Tied in third place were two members of the Border U/23 IPT team, Sean Brock and Jade Buitendag with identical scores of 150 ( 77;73 ).
Match Play
The first round saw a good mix of youth and experience with the young guns giving a very good account of themselves. An early surprise was Wynand Scholtz beating Daniel Gouws, the Stroke Play champion 3/1. Mathew Sutherland proved too good for Wesley Putzier beating him 4/3. Johan Du Plessis showed all of his experience against a determined Jade Buitendag in beating him 2/1. In the other match, youth triumphed over experience with Sean Brock coming back from 3 down o beat Norman Phillips 1up.
The semi finals were also very tight games with Mathew beating Wynand 1up, making two putts of 12 feet plus on the last two holes. In the other game Johan again proved what a dangerous match play player he is, taking the lead early in his game and never really looking in any trouble as he saw off Sean 2/1.
The Sunday final was set up for an intriguing game. Johan and Mathew both started off slowly, with the first 9 being all square with both players looking off their game as they both scored 41. The game suddenly sprung into life as Johan went on a birdie blitz that Mathew seemed unable to match. Johan came back in 33 to go into a 3 up lead after 18 holes. Mathew threw everything at Johan over the next 13 holes, but everything came back with interest from Johan. Mathew started birdie, birdie, par, birdie and birdie over the first 5 holes of the afternoon round and unbelievably still found himself 3 down, as Johan answered with 4 birdies of his own. Johan would eventually close out the game 6/5 with a finish of birdie, eagle, birdie, par over holes 10 to 13. This was a hard lesson for Mathew, as it was his first match play loss in 14 matches. He will, however, undoubtedly be back in the near future. Johan was a very worthy champion for 2011.
B-Division
Stroke Play
Silvio Sossi was also a winner by two strokes with a score of 164 ( 83;81 ) over Michael Sharp 166 ( 83;83 ). Third place went to Victor Ross with a score of 167 ( 84;83 ).
Match Play
The first round saw a derby game with Anton Toich beating brother Luka to move on to the semifinals. Silvio Sossi beat Jason Schmidt, Victor Ross beat Duane Randall and Riaan Grebe beat Michael Sharp to round up the first round. In the semifinals Anton beat Silvio and Victor beat Riaan.
Once again Sunday’s final was closely fought with both players having leads of 3up over the 36 holes. Eventually Victor beat Anton 3/1with the latter really taking strain, having to walk for almost 72 holes over the two days.
C-Division
Stroke Play
The C division was a very tight affair, with the young Selborne College student Shiven Moodley beating Wayne Zietsman on the first sudden death play-off hole, after both ended with a total of 179. Shiven ( 92;87 ) and Wayne (86;93 ). Third place went to Richard Eales on a total of 183 ( 89;94 ).
Match Play
The first round saw Shiven Moodley, Dirk Hanekom, Owen Newton and Wayne Zietsman advancing to the afternoon semifinals. Due to fading light all four players agreed to play the semifinals over 15 holes. Shiven beating Owen 4/3 and Dirk beating Wayne by the same margin.
Sunday’s final was won well by Dirk Hanekom, beating his younger opponent 4/3.
